Cloverfield – THE Found Footage

User Rating: 9

Ok, ok. Maybe the title I used is a little bit pretentious. I mean, there are other awesome found footages. But let me use this title with this MASTERPIECE. I was in the mood for a good classic, I chose Cloverfield and gosh… Every time it’s almost as good as the first time. I’ll not consider all the (clever) marketing moves before the movie got out, let’s just consider the movie itself.

First: the idea. The idea is something crazy AND genius back in the days the movie was done. Doing a catastrofic/monster movie IN this style is something thrilling. You need to put a lot of effort though! The effects need(in some things) to be good and the plot needs to be interesting, so that all the monster-hype doesn’t vanish after few minutes.

Here you have EVERYTHING. And all the found footage rules are respected.

Little resume: A monster attacks Manhattan and we’re seeing the thing from the perspective of some guys who were recording a farewell party of one of them when it all happened.Apart from the AMAZING scenario of Manhattan, the movie shines for many amazing details. The realistic characters, for example. You have the annoying cameraman, the douchey protagonist, the dark girl and many others. And they’re not stereotyped at all.

Apart from the AMAZING scenario of Manhattan, the movie shines for many amazing details. The realistic characters, for example. You have the annoying cameraman, the douchey protagonist, the dark girl and many others. And they’re not stereotyped at all. Everyone of them is magistrally characterized, so that we can see, during the movie, many sides of their personalities. The acting is good, in the sense that everycharacter plays perfectly their role. The characters and the background story going on(more or less a love story, but more complicated than that) are so cool that you feel totally immersed in it. And that’s the secret! The movie could be a pleasant movie even without the monster or the found-footage thing. So the monster attack comes as a real thrill! And the monster sights are PERFECTLY done. Never too much, never too few. You’d probably expect to see a bit more from a monster movie, but NOT this one. Because it doesn’t need to. If they had shown something more or sooner the movie would have lost something…Then we have the filming reasons. About this, I’ve read SO MUCH bad and terribly wrong criticism about Cloverfield. Some people say it’s pointless filming in such situations, or that the reactions aren’t realistic. Everything terribly wrong. I could debunk every criticism about it. The reasons are perfect because Hud(the cameraman) takes the thing very seriously to document all the happenings. Plus, he leaves the camera down or doesn’t keep it up when he’s in a hurry doing something else. Just when he’s lucid he films. And many reactions(such as

And many reactions(such as paralizing in front of a danger) are perfectly realistic. Trust me. Or ask me in the comment if something in the movie makes you doubtful. I’ll be glad to answer that. Then, after all these perfect things, we have the AWESOME trivia. Things that you can notice in the movie just if you’ve read them somewhere. But when you’ll notice them, it will be incredible. The plot will gain even more meaning, always leaving a bit of mystery. It’s easy to see the hand(I guess) of the producer J.J. Abrams, the same of a mystery masterpiece as the tv series Lost. With all this considered, this movie deserves a full 9.0. Wish we could see more movies like this recently.
